Amy Cuddy’s TED Talk “Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are” is one that has stuck with me for a long time. She talks about the power of presence, and how body language not only influences how others perceive us but also how we perceive ourselves. This idea of presence is something I integrate into my leadership coaching sessions on the golf course.

Cuddy’s concept of “power posing” and the impact of non-verbal cues on confidence can be translated into the way leaders carry themselves on and off the course. Golf demands presence. If you’re not fully focused, if your mind is wandering, your performance will reflect that. Similarly, in leadership, presence—both physical and emotional—affects how effectively you lead and connect with your team.

On the course, I work with leaders to become more aware of how they hold themselves. Are they tense or relaxed? Confident or hesitant? By observing their body language during a round of golf, we can draw parallels to their leadership presence. Often, simply adjusting posture or mindset can make a significant difference in both their golf game and their leadership style.

Amy Cuddy’s work reminds us that how we show up in the world shapes not only how others see us but also how we see ourselves. For leaders, cultivating a strong presence on the course translates directly into how they lead with confidence and authority in their organisations.
