One of the most powerful TED Talks I’ve come across is Simon Sinek’s “How Great Leaders Inspire Action.” His message about the importance of knowing your “why” resonates deeply with my approach to leadership coaching, especially on the golf course.
Sinek talks about how great leaders inspire by focusing on their core purpose—their “why”—rather than just the “what” or “how” of what they do. I’ve found that the golf course offers a unique environment where leaders can step back from the day-to-day pressures of business and reconnect with that deeper sense of purpose. There’s something about being out in the open air, surrounded by nature, that helps clear the mind and allows space for reflection.
During our sessions, I often ask leaders to reflect on their own “why” between shots. Why do they lead? What impact do they want to make? These moments of reflection on the course help them gain clarity and reconnect with the passion that drives them—whether in their business or personal life.
Golf is a perfect metaphor for this journey. Each shot requires focus and intention, much like each decision in leadership. By getting to the heart of why they lead, executives leave the course not only as better golfers but as more purposeful and inspired leaders.
